The Variants of Rio d’Ouro Cane Spirit
Rio d’Ouro sugarcane rum is a digestif commonly known as cana-cana, as it is a 100% organic beverage produced exclusively from a single raw material: pure sugarcane.
Rio D’Ouro digestifs contain no added chemical components, no yeast, no additives, and no preservatives, at any stage of the production process.
The sugarcane used as our raw material is harvested only during the dry season in São Tomé and Príncipe, known as the Gravana, specifically from July to September. During this period, the sugar content in the cane is naturally high enough that there is no need for added refined sugar or yeast during the incubation process.
The sugarcane is harvested in the Caldeira fields, in the district of Lobata, and processed at the Rio D’Ouro Factory in Roça Agostinho Neto. Using modern milling and distillation equipment that is well suited to the craft, while still preserving the traditional aspects of this beverage’s production, Rio D’Ouro sugarcane rum has already become a favorite among true connoisseurs.
Throughout the entire production process, technical, scientific and hygiene procedures are implemented, from the selection of sugarcane varieties, planting, maintenance, harvesting, transportation, cleaning, milling, incubation, distillation and alcohol adjustment to the final bottling.
Our production is currently focused on three sugarcane varieties: Carice, Xitra and Preta. Each variety produces a sugarcane rum with its own exclusive flavor.
After distillation, Rio D’Ouro sugarcane rum is adjusted to the appropriate alcohol percentage and stored in stainless steel vats suitable for this purpose, where it undergoes an aging process before being bottled.
There are currently three varieties of Rio D’Ouro sugarcane rum: Rio D’Ouro Branquinha, Rio D’Ouro Crioula and Rio D’Ouro Premium.
Rio D’Ouro Branquinha is the pure distillate, bottled at 40 percent alcohol and aged for an average of one year. This digestif is recommended for those who appreciate a fine sugarcane rum, as it still preserves the natural flavor and aroma of the cane. Thanks to the organic cultivation of the Caldeiras fields, this beverage retains intense yet well-integrated aromas that are elegant and smooth on the nose, giving it exceptional qualities for crafting an excellent caipirinha.
Rio D’Ouro Crioula is simply Rio D’Ouro Branquinha aged with cinnamon and vanilla.
Cinnamon (Miconia albicans), abundant in the forests of São Tomé and Príncipe, is valued not only for its natural beauty but also for its culinary and medicinal properties. Its distinctive aroma makes it ideal for flavoring warm beverages and sweet dishes.

Rio D’Ouro Premium is simply our Rio D’Ouro Branquinha sugarcane rum aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years. This beverage is exclusive and produced in limited quantities. The humid tropical climate, with an average temperature of 25°C, imparts a truly special aroma. Better than any description, it must be tasted.
